10 × 10 = 100% JACQUARD – a contemporary art exhibition will be presented in Vilnius, on 23 January – 21 February 2015.

The exhibition will present the works of 10 contemporary artists from Norway and 10 from Lithuania. The focus of the exhibition is digital Jacquard weaving.

The Jacquard loom was invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard and first presented to the public in France in 1801. Traditionally, jacquard looms are used to produce weaved textiles. The difference from the ordinary weaving loom lies in the fact that technically one can control every thread of the warp. The invention of Joseph Marie Jacquard was controlled by punch cards, where one row of holes corresponded to one row of thread in the design. Later this control system became a source of inspiration to many inventors and now is considered the basis for modern programming.

All artworks in this exhibition are related to this technology in one way or another, however, each treats it differently. Part of artists enjoys technical possibilities while the others conceptualize on the development of digital technology and the way mankind is taking in general. Many works are shown in the interaction with other technologies: sound, light, video. The first row, however, is always taken by textile, since jacquard weaving is namely textile technology. Other artists that do not work directly with textile increasingly discover it as well and then ‘translate” their works into textile expression, because jacquard loom allows it. In such case the knowledge and services of these several manufacturers-specialists of artistic jacquard weaving are used.

But what happens with jacquard weave if it is used only as a technology to achieve textile expression? What happens when several media are combined into one? Which direction digital technology is taking, what place digital jacquard weave occupies in the contemporary art scene?

The goal of this exhibition is to answer these questions and to create an environment for a dialogue between Norwegian and Lithuanian artists.
